September is “Life Preservation Month”

But I am lobbying for something deeper: a change in both language and mindset. What if we called it “Life Preservation Month”?

Think of it this way: we don’t call a life preserver an “anti-drowning jacket,” and we don’t call a safety belt an “anti-crash belt.” We don’t have death insurance; we have life insurance. And no one works the 12 steps simply to live addiction-free. They want to live a sober life.

So, how about we change the narrative around suicide to match our ultimate goal?

The ultimate goal is not only to prevent death.

The ultimate goal is to strengthen connection, restore hope, and remind every person that they are seen, heard, valued, and needed.

The ultimate goal is to preserve life.
